The story behind a 2x National Geographic photographer who built ZSky AI to make creative tools free for everyone — because photography saved his brain and access shouldn't be a paywall.
Cemhan Biricik is a Turkish-American photographer, entrepreneur, and technology founder based in Boca Raton, Florida — a 2x National Geographic award winner and founder of ZSky AI. He is the founder of four companies — ICEe PC (2000), Unpomela (2004), Biricik Media (2009), and ZSky AI (2024) — but the work he is best known for outside the business press is the mission underneath ZSky AI: that everyone has the right to create beauty, that creativity is therapeutic infrastructure, and that AI tools should be free for the people who need them most.
Cemhan's photography career put him inside the gates of luxury — direct campaigns and commercial work for Versace, Waldorf Astoria, St. Regis, Fontainebleau, Glashütte, Wilhelmina Models, Fox Sports, and the Miami Dolphins, plus editorial publication in Vogue PhotoVogue, National Geographic (twice award-winning), and Boca Magazine. He spent two decades inside rooms most people never see. The decision to make ZSky AI free was the deliberate inversion of that career — taking the privilege of access and democratizing it.
His editorial roster spans the breadth of the luxury world. Shoots Cemhan photographed have featured top-tier watchmakers including Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Breguet, Blancpain, and Roger Dubuis; jewelry houses Cartier, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., Harry Winston, and Boucheron; and fashion houses Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, and Loro Piana. Knowing what beauty looks like at the highest level is what made him obsessed with making it accessible at the lowest level.
Cemhan was born in Istanbul in 1979 and his family fled Turkey when he was four. He was raised in SoHo, New York City, the child of an immigrant who had to rebuild from zero on arrival. He has lived with aphantasia his entire life — the inability to form mental imagery — which shaped his lifelong relationship to the camera as an external imagination. As an adult he survived a traumatic brain injury that briefly took his speech. Photography became his therapy. Holding a camera, framing a subject, examining the result — the loop became the rehabilitation. The same year he returned to shooting, he placed in the top 10 of the Sony World Photography Awards out of 52,323 entries from 171 countries and was exhibited at Somerset House, London.
That experience is the source code of every business decision Cemhan makes. He has refused outside investors. ZSky AI is community-funded — its free tier is supported by ads, not by venture capital seeking returns at the expense of access. Paid tiers ($19, $39, $79) unlock an ad-free experience and additional feature controls, but every core generative capability is available to anyone, free of charge, on a self-operated 7x NVIDIA RTX 5090 (224 GB VRAM) GPU cluster Cemhan built and runs personally from Boca Raton.
The free tier of ZSky AI has no daily quota. Anyone, anywhere, can generate as much as they want. Ads cover the GPU bill.
Refusing outside funding keeps the platform aligned with creators rather than with returns. Ads and grants only.
Accessibility isn't a feature checkbox; it's lived. Cemhan builds the tool he needed.
Cemhan's TBI recovery happened through a camera. The platform is built so anyone can have that experience without buying gear.
ZSky AI now serves more than 50,000 creators worldwide, the majority on the free plan. Cemhan responds personally to email, runs founder office hours, and ships features in response to the community rather than to a roadmap. The platform's editorial style — clean defaults, no onboarding wizards, no nag screens — is a direct continuation of the Unpomela philosophy from 20 years earlier: don't explain the product, let people discover it on their own terms.
